New Horsey permit for March 2009 open days

By admin | December 12, 2008

Following the discussions earlier this year regarding a simpler way to administer permits for the end of season 2 week open day period on Horsey Mere, a new permit system will be trialled.

The purpose of this is to facilitate both easier access and reduce the need to visit each boat and collect permit fee’s, this often risking the disturbance of the areas being fished and causing friction with the anglers. The plan is to issue a 14 day period permit  at a fee of  £30.00 per boat.

This will allow the preregistered boat to fish without the inconvenience of a bailiff cruising through the fishing areas disturbing the swim, to collect permit fee’s. To see this work effectively it would require the prior registration of the boat to be used and for the registration number/name of the boat to be clearly displayed whilst fishing. Boats using this system will immediately be recognisable and will not be subject to a visit from the bailiff.

If all users would make use of this system it will ensure that the whole broad is allowed to settle once everyone is fishing and optimise the chance of picking up a fish.

If you are a likely to be fishing on Horsey in March 2009, then please consider taking advantage of this new permit system and maximise the benefit of being left to fish unhindered.

At £2.00 per day per boat for two anglers is not bad given the freedom on offer.

The application form can be downloaded below and should be sent to the address detailed in the permit application.

Winter access for the 2008 -2009 season

By admin | May 6, 2008

A preliminary meeting of the partnership that is managing the access on Horsey Mere has revealed that despite the problems with the few anglers who broke the rules in the 2007-2008 season, Horsey Mere will be open to pike anglers for the 2008-2009 winter season, subject to further discussions.

With regard to the individuals who were caught breaking both access guidelines and committing other bye-law offences, it is understood that these are being handled in partnership with the local authorities.

Whilst there will be another meeting later in the year to settle the access agreement, should you wish to fish Horsey Mere this coming winter, then please make use of the permit booking system and send your application to the Horsey estate as soon as possible to ensure you get a date you want.

Get an application form.

The final details and any changes will be notified via this website as soon as details are known and confirmed.

It is important that any angler making use of this access agreement observe and fish within the guidelines laid down in the agreement to prevent loss of this excellent opportunity to fish the superb venue. Hopefully those of you who wish to fish there can appreciate this and will support us.

Access to Horsey under threat!

By admin | March 3, 2008

The trial which has opened an area of privately owned Horsey Mere for pike fishing is being jeopardised by anglers who have been caught fishing illegally with and without permits and outside the agreed area.

The Broads Authority is taking the breach of the permit system very seriously and the offences are currently being investigated pending prosecution.

The fishing around the River Thurne is treasured by pike anglers nationally. However Horsey Mere is a legally protected wildlife haven for migrating birds who visit to seek a safe refuge in their thousands. Just one boat can disturb them and if this happens too often they can loose condition, affecting breeding success.

Angling on Horsey Mere is closed from November 1st to the end of February to give migrating birds winter security, although angling at Horsey Staithe is permitted. This is respected by the majority of anglers and other navigators who are grateful to be allowed to fish there from June 16th until October 31st and from March 1st to the closure of the fishing season on March 14th.

Access for the 2007/2008 Winter Season confirmed.

By admin | December 4, 2007

Given the uncertainty of access to the Mere due to the delay in organising a pre-season meeting as would normally be the case, access for this Winter has been confirmed by the Horsey Estate and everything remains as set up last season.

Ticket costs remain the same, the application form all remain the same, the area of access too, as detailed on the map is identical, so those of you who want to get a day booked should download an application form and send some dates to the estate asap.

There will be a meeting at the end of the season to review the 2007/2008 season and this should, if everyone honours the rules and guidelines again this Winter, give us a chance to secure next Winter and for you to have the advantage of knowing for sure well in advance, keep you posted on this.

In the meantime, those of you booked for this Winter, ensure you keep within the guidelines, get some fish and perhaps keep us informed of what you catch, no need to go into detail about how, just to let us get a picture of what the fishing is doing relative to the type of Winters we are experiencing.

Tightlines.

This new site has an RSS feed so you can have the latest information or updates on the site available on your desktop as it happens.

Hopefully you will find it a little easier to use and find the information you need to get a trip or two booked to fish the Mere.

The 2007-2008 season is approaching rapidly and it is hoped that the access on Horsey Mere will be maintained for the coming Winter and as soon as this is confirmed the details will be posted for your information. Full details will be added to the Horsey Angling page when confirmed.

Winter 2006-7

By admin | June 7, 2007

Following analysis of the recorded data from the trial in 2005-6, a meeting was called to discuss the future of the Wildfowl Refuges and again the decision has been made to continue the ‘voluntary refuge’ project, with the same requests to all users to observe the Code of Conduct and minimise the disturbance on all the Thurne Broads.

In addition at the meeting it was announced that the Horsey Mere angling access trial would be continued. Here again the data confirmed that the permitted angling access had not contributed to the disturbance of the wildfowl.

Such was the feelings that there was more to be gained by extending the trial, that it has been agreed with English Nature and the Horsey Estate, that not only will we have access for the Winter of 2006-7, but the amount of days will be increased to give 7 day a week access for 1 boat and the area available for fishing will be increased too. More detail of which will be found on the Horsey Angling Access page of this web site.

Winter 2005-6

By admin | June 7, 2007

clear and cold winter morningFollowing the initial trial in 2004/5 the project was continued for the Winter of 2005-6 as there was no recorded increased disturbance generally, other than that on Horsey Mere.

In an attempt to resolve the poaching on Horsey Mere a discussion meeting was held to attempt to find an answer. The suggested answer was to allow a limited access to the Mere in the hope that this would remove the urge to poach. It was to have been a 7 day access, however this was finally set at 3 days per week.

With the new permitted access for one boat on each of the days, the trial continued with the addition of bailiffing by locally appointed wardens, chosen from the pike anglers regularly fishing the area.

The general result of the trial identified that the disturbance caused during the 2005/6 trial was from sources other than permitted angling boats. Various incidents occurred that displaced the birds, some of which were again unauthorised pike fishing between the permitted days.
